Background:
The prostate is a small, walnut-sized gland located just below the bladder and wrapped around the urethra. It is likely that BPH is caused by an accumulation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), an extremely active form of testosterone. DHT is thought to be a major culprit in causing BPH because high levels of DHT have bean found in the prostate tissue of men with BPH.*2 An enzyme known as 5-alpha-reductase (5-AR) converts testosterone to DHT and it's activity increases as men age.*3 Increased 5AR activity and subsequent increases in prostate levels of DHT appear to have a major influence on BPH formation.

Since the prostate surrounds the first section of the urethra, its enlargement can interfere with the normal flow of urine and cause uncomfortable symptoms such as:

• weak, interrupted urine stream
• sense of incomplete bladder emptying
• dribbling
• difficulty in starting urination

Pygeura -- Extracts made from the bark of the pygeum tree, a large evergreen found in the higher elevations of central and southern Africa. It was historically used by natives as a tea for relief of urinary disorders. Pygeum has been shown to have anti-inflammatory activity and inhibit bladder hyper-reactivity.*12 Beta-sitosterol is one of the main active ingredients extracted from pygeum. A study of 200 men with BPH found that, after three months, the men taking beta-sitosterol had a statistically significant improvement in the velocity of urine flow than those taking a placebo*13 Pro Four uses a pygeum extract standardized to 13 percent minimum beta-sitosterol content compared to other products containing unspecified amounts.
